Dixarit is used for prevention of migraine headache and to relieve symptoms of menopausal flushing. Your doctor may also prescribe Dixarit for other medical conditions.
Before you take Dixarit
Do not take Dixarit if you are allergic to clonidine
Do not take Dixarit if you have a slow or irregular heart beat.
Do not take Dixarit after the expiry date listed on the packet or blister strip.
Do take Dixarit if the packaging is torn or shows signs tampering.
You must tell your doctor if have, or have had any of the following conditions:
- Heart failure or any heart or circulation problem
- Stroke, transient ischaemic attack (TIA)
- Mental depression
- Sugar diabetes
- Constipation
- Nerve damage, which may lead to weakness in the arms or legs
- Any problems with your kidneys
Some medicines, if combined with Dixarit may produce unwanted side effects or reduce the effectiveness of Dixarit. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other prescription medicines or homeopathic remedies, especially if they include:
- Other medicines for high blood pressure
- Medicines for heart problems
- Alcohol
- Medicines to control mood swings and some types of anti-depressants
Ask your doctor for advice if you are pregnant, intend on becoming pregnant, breastfeeding or intending on breastfeeding during the course of taking Dixarit.
Dixarit is not suitable for clearing acute migraine headaches or for children unde the age 12 years.
Dosage and Administration
The usual recommended dose for migraine prevention and menopausal flushing is one tablet, twice daily. However, you should only use Dixarit as directed by your doctor.
You should take Dixarit at the same each day.
Dixarit should be taken with a glass of water.
If you forget a dose
It is important to take Dixarit as directed by your doctor. If you should miss a dose, take missed as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only your usual dose at that time. Do not double up on the dosage to make up for the missed amount.
Overdose
Seek medical advice if you have taken more than the recommended or prescribed dose. Advice can be obtained from doctor, pharmacist or Poison Information Center.
Signs of overdose can include:
- dryness of mouth
- slow heart beat
- drowsiness
- temporarily stopping breathing
- coma
Other signs can include:
- dizziness
- weakness
- lethargy
- feeling cold
- vomiting
- looking pale
- an irregular heart beat
- a rise in blood pressure.
Side Effects
All prescription medicines carry some risk of unwanted side effects. If you have concerns of the effects after taking Dixarit, talk to your doctor.
The most common side effects are taking Dixarit include drowsiness, dryness of mouth and lightheadedness when you stand up suddenly.
Less common side effects include:
- Blurred vision
- Dizziness
- Confusion
- Nausea and vomiting
- Sleep disturbances
- Mental depression
- Irrational or abnormal thoughts
- Irritability
- Decreased sex drive / impotence
- General feeling of unwellness
- Thinning of hair
- Rash / hives / itching
- Constipation
- Dryness of the nose and eyes
- Pain in the salivary glands
- Tingling or numbness in the hand or feet
- Larger breasts than normal, in men
- Slow or irregular heart beat
Tell your doctor if any of these side effects persist or become bothersome.
Storage
Leave the tablets in protective blister strip until it is time to take the dose.
Keep Dixarit in a cool, dry place where the temperature stays below 25°C or 77°F.
Do not store Dixarit in direct sunlight or heat.
Keep Dixarit away from children.
